What is the best way to hang a mantle shelf on my wall made of drywall?

The mantle is 100 years old and very heavy. It doesn't include the two legs that it originally had. It is just the shelf. I want to use it as a shelf in my kitchen. I won't put anything heavy on. I just want to be sure it is very secure. The kitchen it is going to hang in was built in 1974.
